After buying our typical U.S. "on-the-road-equipment" (cooler with ice, soft drinks and beer, sausages, cheese, bread etc., toilet paper and a good stock of water, Friday morning we headed out east all through Nevada towards Moab, UT. We took U.S. 50, "The Loneliest Road in America". Well, after 2 years of living in Nevada we didn't think Hwy 50 was all that lonely, we've been on lonelier roads.

Highway 50
Nach ungefähr 50 Minuten kommt man nach Fallon, wo jetzt die U.S. Naval Weapons Fighter School ist, auch bekannt als "Top Gun". Die Bilder hier sind ein Stück östlich von Fallon, wo man einen Salzsee überquert. Leider waren keine Flugzeuge zu Übungsflügen unterwegs - am nächsten Tag war die Fallon Airshow.	After about 50 minutes we reached Fallon, home of the U.S. Naval Fighter Weapons School, also known as Top Gun. The pictures were taken a little further east where we crossed a salt flat. Unfortunately, there were no training flights to watch on account of the Fallon Air Show that started the next day.

Ich hatte in dem Buch "Blue Highways" von Least Heat Moon über diesen Baum gelesen. Keine Ahnung wer damit angefangen hat, seine alten Schuhe zusammenzubinden und auf den Baum zu werfen.	I had read about Shoe Tree in the book "Blue Highways" by a guy named Least Heat Moon. I have no idea who first started tying an old pair of shoes together and throwing it on a tree, but it caught on...

Von Paul und Lisa von The Busy Bunny wussten wir, dass einer ihrer Lieferanten im Diamond Valley, ganz in der Nähe von Eureka, Nevada liegt. Es handelt sich um American Pet Diner, die qualitativ hochwertiges Timothy-Gras (Wiesen-Lieschgras) anbauen und das Heu in alle Welt verkaufen. Wir haben uns mit Lisa und Reese Marshall, den Eigentümern in Verbindung gesetzt und gefragt ob wir denn vorbeikommen dürften. Die Antwort war ja, und da ihre Farm nur ca. 18 km abseits des Highway 50 lag haben wir einen kleinen Abstecher gemacht. From Paul and Lisa from The Busy Bunny we knew, that one of their suppliers was in the Diamond Valley, near Eureka, Nevada. It is American Pet Diner, who grow high quality timothy grass and ship the hay all over th world. We contacted the owners, Lisa and Reese Marshall, and asked if we could drop by, and they said sure. Since their Farm is only about 11 miles off Hwy 50 we decided to have a little side trip. Left one of their fields, above Uwe and Lisa at their packaging facility.
Das Heu ist deshalb so hochwertig, weil es in der Höhenlage (die Farm liegt auf über 2000 m) sehr langsam wächst, sehr nährstoff- und vitaminreich ist und nur 2 mal im Jahr geerntet wird. Angebaut wird ausserdem eine Weizensorte ohne Haare an den Ähren, die noch grün geerntet und getrocknet wird und auch verfüttert wird. Aus dem Timothy-Heu werden auch Pellets, Heuwürfel u.ä. hergestellt. Das Heu aus Eureka wird bevorzugt für Rennpferde verwendet, seit neuestem aber auch über APD für Haustiere.	The hay has this high quality because it grows slowly at the altitude (the farm is at about 6000 feet) and thus is rich in nutrients and vitamins. It is cut only twice a year. Also grown is a special kind of wheat without hairs, that is cut green and dried and can also be fed. The timothy hay is also used to produce pellets, cubes etc. Hay from Eureka is a favorite among race horses, but with APD it recently has become available for pets.
Lisa sagt, die Tiere mögen das Heu weil es "süss" (im übertragenen Sinn) ist, und dass sie bis nach Japan exportiert. Wir überlegen uns auch ob wir einige ihrer Produkte in unser Programm aufnehmen, nicht als Alleinfutter, das wäre zu teuer, aber vielleicht als gesundes Leckerli oder für kranke Tiere, die Heu fressen sollen aber normalerweise keines mögen.	Lisa says that the animals love their hay because it is sweet, and that they ship all the way to Japan. We are currently thinking of adding a few of the APD products to our shop, not as regular feed, it would be too expensive for that after it has been brought halfway around the world, but maybe as a healthy treat, or for sick and recovering animals that should eat hay but normally don't like it.

Relativ abrupt beginnt dann in Utah die Canyonlandschaft.	Then, relatively abrupt, the landscape changes dramatically into this.

Wie man rechts sieht gibt es immer noch Idioten, die meinen ihre Kritzeleien verschönerten diese Landschaft.	As you can see above, there are still idiots out there who think they can improve the landscape by their scribblings.
